Erasmus MC Eread
Erasmus MC Research & Education Accommodation Development, or EREAD for short, houses the research and education program of the university medical center. This program includes the renovation of several buildings, an extensive project that will last until approximately 2030. A new phase has been completed around the spaces of the former cafeteria.
Ector Hoogstad Architects designed the interior and the look and feel for the new learning and working environment for students and staff. Ahrend furnished it with circular furniture according to the style book.
Iconic architecture
The iconic white education and research complex of Erasmus MC is a highlight in post-war Rotterdam architecture. The complex, which is now more than fifty years old, is being renovated step by step. Multifunctional teaching rooms for instruction and group work, study places and catering have recently been realized. The interior has been completely renewed. Wood, bamboo and living greenery have been added to the original sober material palette of mainly concrete, glass, white-lacquered steel and linoleum.

Original design inspires
The (interior) architects were inspired by Jean Prouvé's original design. Olga Timmermans, interior designer at Ahrend: 'Characteristic of his façade is the use of curves. Inside the interior, this is connected with circles on walls and ceilings. This influenced the layout and determined the selection of furniture with rounded corners. The users then passed on additional wishes.'
‘Lecturers, researchers and doctors make optimal use of the functions and flexibility of the design’
Flexible and movable
One of the user wishes was flexibility of design: changing setups must be able to be realized quickly and without much effort. That is why a large part of the Ahrend 314 tables, in the teaching room, are easy to move thanks to the wheels. 'But with the moving of the tables, electrification must also be able to move with it. That is why we have incorporated special cabling in the more than 300 tables delivered and used movable electrical columns. The Ahrend Well chairs are also partly mobile.'

(In)formal meeting
The connecting routes of Erasmus Eread have become social zones with a residential function. This is where students, teachers and scientists can meet. 'Collaborate, discuss or have lunch at Ahrend Aero tables with Ahrend Engage lounge sofas in combination with high standing tables and stools interspersed with low tables, poufs and lounge chairs from Muuto, Cascando, Enea, Bas Vellekoop and HÅG. When you walk through the teaching, research and meeting rooms, you will see students, lecturers, researchers and doctors in various working methods making optimal use of the functions and flexibility of the interior.'
